The Magic of T-Shirts

Nicole Couch

They're simple, comfortable, and perhaps one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own: we're talking t-shirts! If you're like me, you probably buy a tee every time you go to the beach or to a concert--out of all the drawers in my dresser, my t-shirt collection takes up the most room. T-shirts are a staple for lounge-wear, pajamas, and active-wear, but have you ever realized how much you can wear them as part of your daily wear as well?

We chose one simple t-shirt and styled it in tons of different ways to show just some of the many easy ways a single shirt can be worn. Keeping all of these possibilities in mind extends the smallest wardrobes into endless possibilities that keep all of your clothes exciting and fresh. This eliminates the need to buy more clothes, freeing up some space in your closet and dresser, and it certainly saves you a few bucks, too!

Here is a montage of style, profiling one single t-shirt. Imagine all of the t-shirts that you've collected over the years and enjoy!

With a pair of black denim shorts and a denim jacket, this look couldn't be any easier. A pair of high-top Converse give it an edgy, timeless flare, and the jacket is the perfect layer for transitioning between hot summer day and cool summer night. This look is great for spring and warm fall days, too. For high-waisted shorts, tuck the shirt into the waistline so that the full effect of the style of shorts is achieved.

For a slightly dressier and more feminine style, simply wear the t-shirt over a lightweight dress! Of course pairing the shirt with a skirt will achieve the same effect, but why not get a little more use out of a sundress by turning it and the t-shirt into a whole new ensemble? For a more flattering look, tie the shirt into a knot at the waist. Wear this look with a pair of boots or sneakers. Layer it with a jacket or a blazer.

For a cooler weather outfit, tuck a t-shirt into your favorite pair of jeans and tie a flannel around your waist. A pair of sneakers finishes the casual look in a perfect way, and for added detail, try cuffing the sleeves of the shirt. This immediately transforms a big, casual shirt into something more form-fitting that is more appropriate for different styles.

Stevie Nicks Style

Nicole Couch

For some ideas on how to bring Stevie Nicks' style into your modern wardrobe, have a look at the outfits below! These ensembles are created using many pieces that most of us already own. Incorporating looks like this into what you wear every day will have you dancing to your favorite Fleetwood Mac songs in no time.

This look is a take on Stevie's iconic gothic style--a black ethereal dress paired with celestial earrings are chic and edgy, and a pair of heeled, knee-high boots in a contrasting suede finish the look in a classic Stevie way. No matter her ensemble, knee-high boots are often a big component.   Stevie is also known for mixing and matching textiles and textures. If there's one thing we can take away from her style, it's to stop stressing about being so matchy-matchy!

For a more casual look, we're in love with these flattering denim overalls paired with a boho kimono. The flared legs of the overalls are totally Stevie, and the embroidered star boots finish off the look in such a cool and effortless way. This outfit would look great with a little satin tank, as shown above, but any sort of graphic tee, tank top, or blouse would look totally cool with this whole ensemble.

This boho look plays on Stevie's softer, more ethereal looks. A pair of earth-toned culottes paired with an embroidered, lightweight blouse are pretty and feminine, and a pair of white calf-high boots make the look a little sharper. A hat and beaded moon necklace are two accessories that are so Stevie.   This is a great look for just about any day that can be worn casually or for something slightly more formal.

Finally, this ensemble that was styled by @magicfabricride on ShopLook is such a classic Stevie look. We love the unusual combination of fabrics and prints, and each accessory brings in an edgy flare that we know Stevie would love. Ethical Makeup Brands

Nicole Couch

Walking through the aisles of drug stores, department stores, and beauty stores while shopping for makeup can be utterly overwhelming--the bright lights, endless brands, and uncountable products can turn a quick trip to buy a lipstick into a confusing and frustrating process. Deciding between brands, products, and colors is hard enough, but recently one more layer of consideration has become important to many shoppers--ethics.

"Cruelty-free" cosmetics are becoming more and more popular, yet some brands are still falling behind. Here are five drugstore brands that you can be sure do not test on animals and create products that you can always purchase completely guilt-free.

1. NYX

" NYX Professional Makeup is certified and acknowledged by PETA as a cruelty-free brand. We are committed to producing cruelty-free cosmetics. We do not test any of our products on animals.

2. wet n wild

"Wet n wild® NEVER tests on animals, and we are super proud of this. We never have, and we never will. We believe in beauty without cruelty first! None of our furry, feathery, or scaly friends were harmed in the making of our products. Whether you’re a card-carrying vegetarian who is committed to animal rights (and good for you!), or you just love puppies and bunnies and want them to smile (and who doesn’t?), we are with you! We want that too! In fact, most of our products are not only cruelty-free, but vegan as well."

Audrey Hepburn Style Inspiration

Nicole Couch

She was glamorous, sophisticated, and the embodiment of grace. For decades, she has been a style icon and has served as inspiration to women all around the globe. She's known for her LBDs and strands of pearls, and during her lifetime, she dazzled on and off the screen. She is Audrey Hepburn, and this is how you can dress like her.

Let's start with some dresses--notice that each of these four dresses share similar lengths & form-flattering silhouettes. Although dresses like this may be too dressy to wear to the office, each of them would be great for a date night or any formal event.

Inspiration behind these dresses? Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany's. With that being said, however, Audrey Hepburn was known for bringing her own style into the lives of the characters she played.

If taking Audrey to the office with you is what you want to do, this is the way to do it. Perhaps as much as the dresses she wore, Audrey was often photographed wearing pants and loafers. Comfortable, chic, and elegant, but simple and clean-cut. Here are a couple of ways to do just that with clothes that you most likely already have in your closet. These are timeless pieces that can be mixed & matched and worn through most seasons.

Bright colors were not often Audrey's first choice. She tended to stick to a neutral color palette, which offers effortless sophistication and the ability to easily mix and match just about any clothing to create endless ensembles.

However if color is something you cannot go without, rest assured--you can still easily achieve the Audrey Hepburn look, but with a little more pizazz. The prints & patterns are up to you; what we're really looking to Audrey for is silhouettes and accessories. Above are two very different dresses with very different accessories and shoes. Both dresses, however, could be mixed and matched with any of the accessories & shoes. If there's one thing that we should learn from Audrey, it's how to mix and match.

With most outfits, Audrey wore very minimal accessories. They were usually simple and classic, like a pair of diamond earrings. However, the occasional bold accessory, like a wide-brimmed hat, always went effortlessly with whatever outfit she was wearing. There were never any forced mixed prints or clashing silhouettes.

f513c617-2cb8-4519-a61b-8bf7f6e2267e.png

Last but certainly not least, this is a fun and casual way to dress like Audrey. Sticking to classic silhouettes, like straight-cut jeans and a simple quarter-sleeve shirt would do the trick, but why not have fun with some playful styles? Although vamped up a bit, these clothes still give very classic impressions. One thing that Audrey often wore is a pair of espadrilles. Have fun with a cute & summery pair, or stick to something a little more muted like a pair of suede mules. A pair of flats would be great, too! One thing that you absolutely can't go wrong with these days is a small scarf or bandana tied around your neck, which is a favorite look of ours that has been carried through decade after decade without a glitch. (Check out our YouTube channel for videos (like this one, and this one) about how to style scarves!)

Whether it's what you wear every day or if you're just looking to add a few pieces to your wardrobe at a time, you can never go wrong with Audrey Hepburn-inspired style. For decades, women have been looking to her for inspiration, and for many decades more, she will continue to serve as a style icon for anyone interested in a little black dress or elegant, Parisian-esque style.

What are your favorite ways to wear Audrey Hepburn style? If you have any classic looks or try any of these, let us know! We'd love to see.

Meghan Markle's Clothes: Why They Matter

Nicole Couch

For months and months, the biggest question in fashion has been “What wedding gown will Meghan Markle wear to marry Prince Harry?” As Meghan stepped out of a vintage Rolls-Royce Saturday morning to ascend the steps of Windsor Castle and walk down the aisle to her groom, all eyes around the world were on her and the hand-made, one-of-a-kind Givenchy gown falling elegantly from her shoulders. In royal life and long before, Meghan has always been known for her sense of style, and as is the case with every royal bride, as much attention is paid to her style as it is to her humanitarian work and lifestyle. With such an impeccable sense of style, and considering that she’s being dressed by the best of the best around the world, we should be paying attention to what she’s wearing. After all, people like her are often who determine what many of us end up wearing.

However, as is the case with all aspects of fashion, what Meghan chooses to wear is so much more important than what the clothing looks like. Where each garment comes from, who makes each garment, and what resources are used to make each garment are crucial in considering what to wear. Whether you're a fan of her style or not, Meghan Markle should absolutely be an inspiration and fashion icon to many, particularly because she cares deeply for each of these considerations and makes huge statements with many of her ensembles that go far beyond their exterior aesthetics.

As every royal occasion requires the perfect ensemble, the pressure for Meghan to wear the right clothing must be quite high. But as someone who has been speaking out about equality and women’s rights from a very young age, the fact that Meghan would often choose to wear clothing of thoughtful designers is no surprise. On many occasions, Meghan has worn ensembles by vegan and sustainability-advocating designer Stella McCartney. The very reception dress that Meghan wore after marrying Prince Harry was a Stella McCartney original. Meghan’s wedding dress was also incredible, and for more reasons beyond the way she looked in it—the Givenchy one-of-a-kind was designed by the first ever female director of Givenchy. As an avid feminist, it is no surprise that Meghan would decide to have the most important garment of her life created in such a way.

The very simple truth is that the fashion industry needs to change, and it needs our help. In the past decades, the path of the industry has taken an extremely sharp turn toward toxic fast fashion, which is monopolizing the industry to the point of world-wide destruction at the cost of the planet, people, and animals. For many people, “sustainability” is a huge word that means a little too much to comprehend. Just like anything else that will yield positive changes, practicing sustainability takes time, effort, and dedication. Sure, not all of us are wearing Stella McCartney on a daily basis, but there are other ways. Pay attention to where clothing comes from, who is making it, and what your purchase of a garment (whether $5 or $55) will really cost in the long run. Make the effort to research different brands that use organic resources and fair labor. Pay attention to brands, whether up-and-coming or already established, that work for women’s rights and human rights. Shop vintage! Use the history of style and clothing to inspire how you view modern fashion, and change your shopping practices to eliminate fast fashion and its cruel consequences.

An absolutely amazing documentary that I highly recommend to anybody is called “The True Cost.” Just over an hour and a half in length, the depths of the fashion industry and its darkest, goriest secrets are explored, from the very beginnings of the production stage in cotton fields in Texas, to working conditions in factories in Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Haiti, to the consumption stage in retail stores around the world, and even to what happens to these non-recycled garments when we mindlessly throw them away. This documentary will open your eyes and at times leave you speechless.

Making major changes in the fashion world is absolutely imperative, and there are endless ways for all of us to start small. As a new royal figure steps up to her well-deserved platform, I am beyond happy that Meghan cares so deeply and advocates for issues like the ones plagued by the fashion industry.

So the next time that something Meghan wears catches your eye, take a minute to consider why she may be wearing that and where the clothing came from. Not everything she wears has hidden meanings, but as all eyes are on these clothes, it’s so important that at least some of them do.

Halloween Edition: Becoming Audrey Hepburn

Nicole Couch

One of the most popular Halloween costumes is Audrey Hepburn's signature look in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Who wouldn't want to wear that amazing dress with all the diamonds and pearls accessories? Well, this Halloween you can, because CHC Vintage is going to help you turn into Audrey Hepburn and other characters from your favorite films!

Step 1: You need a dress with a certain shape. In Breakfast at Tiffany's, Audrey wears a dress with a distinct shape. It is has a scooped neck, it is sleeveless, and it hugs any curve she might have had. While we don't have a dress the exact same color, we do have a dress the exact same shape!

Step 2: The accessories. You have to find a tiara and long cigarette holder to pull off this look. Don't forget that statement pearl necklace along with the black gloves and diamond stud earrings.  For shoes, we went with the comfy look and kept the converse in. You can do that too! Mix it up and make this costume your own.

Step 3: Keep the makeup simple. For a fun night, keep yourself looking fresh. A light foundation and not a lot of blush or contour. The only thing you have to apply a lot of is mascara for that signature doe-eyed Audrey Hepburn look!

Fall Trends 2017

Nicole Couch

With the start of fall on Friday, a new season of trends as started. While you might be thinking ‘I know the trends. Wear burgundy, boots, and have a pumpkin spice latte in my hand,’ you would be wrong. Well, not entirely wrong, but this season brings about a whole new set of trends that are so cute, you’ll throw the burgundy sweater to the side (but don’t throw it too far. You’ll want it back).

One trend seen all over runways and in stores is fringe. And fringe can come on a lot of vintage clothing, like from CHC Vintage. It’s a fun way to look dressed up while wearing a comfortable jacket or shirt. Having the fringe hang from the sleeves of your shirt or even on an understated bag and liven up any look this fall.

https://www.fabric.com/buy/hddr-1314/6-faux-suede-fringe-trim-black

Another big trend is fur. Right now, the humid weather wouldn’t allow everyone to go out and wear a cumbersome fur coat. However, as we digress into colder months, fur will be everywhere. Have it plain or liven it up with some color. Just be sure to double check that it’s fake!

Thank goodness for this next one - lounge wear! Grab those leggings, a comfortable t-shirt and throw your hair in a messy bun. Keep it classy or make it grunge (there are really cute vintage tees from CHC Vintage to help with this look). Have a more leisurewear look with some workout pants and a pair of sneakers. Comfortable will be your favorite look this fall season.

Last but not least, keep a lookout for anything shiny. Metallics, glitters, and anything that sparkles is a must have this fall. Rock a full metallic outfit or keep it simple with some sequins on your favorite shirt, pants, or dress. Tis the season to be shiny!

Use A Vintage Dress for Your Homecoming and Formal Occasions

Nicole Couch

With homecomings coming up or those banquet dinners for work, it is important to dress to impress. It is crucial not to go to over the top, while still having your “Cinderella moment.”

Make sure your dress is long enough! To each her own, but you don’t want to have to worry about pulling your dress down all night. The same goes if the dress is too long. Who wants to be tripping when they’re dancing and having a great time?

 https://www.etsy.com/shop/CHCVintage?ref=l2-shop-header-avatar&section_id=20813859

https://www.etsy.com/shop/CHCVintage?ref=l2-shop-header-avatar&section_id=20813859

While the hemline of your dress can be an issue, the same rule for the neckline! Too plunging can be too much and can be uncomfortable. If you like a deep neckline, rock it! However, make sure you are comfortable so you don’t have to pull the neckline up all night long. *A nice hack is to grab some double sided tape to make sure there is no slippage*

Accessories are important! Dressing up is fun, so have some extra fun by pairing some cute accessories and fashionable shoes with it. Dances like homecoming and special events are all about you getting to dress up and have a good time, so take advantage by going the full nine yards!

https://www.etsy.com/shop/CHCVintage?ref=l2-shop-header-avatar&section_id=20813859

Last but not least, be unique! Vintage dresses are a great way to show up to a party in style. You’ll never have the same dress as someone else, and they are customizable to you. They are also timeless and you will be the belle of the ball.

CHC Vintage has the perfect dresses for you this season during college homecoming and other events that need that special dress for special occasions. Look like a princess while having the time of your life. You can be comfortable and classy while looking amazing with a dress. Our Etsy store, as well as our online store, is stocked with gorgeous dresses for your next social gathering.

Transition into Fall with Ease and CHC Vintage Clothing

Nicole Couch

Women all across America relish in the fall weather. The temperature outside starts to drop, while pumpkin spice food and drink items start to grace grocery store shelves. However, the best part of fall is definitely the fashion.

Before it becomes completely fall with those cute boots and comfy sweaters with jackets, there is a transition period. The weather starts off in the morning as a cool 50°F, rises to 80°F during the middle of the day, and the drops again for cool nights. So the question is: What do I wear?

No one wants to be shivering one minute and sweating the next. So you have to be prepared. Step one is to put away the shorts. Instead, break out the jeans, skirts, and cute dresses that are colored and appropriate for fall. You will look cute while being comfortable and not too hot or too cold. CHC Vintage has plenty of fall sweater dresses, skirts, and more to give you that unique look while keeping you the right temperature.

Break out the jackets! Bomber jackets, army jackets, leather jackets, and more are the perfect piece for the September and October months. When you wear a cute T-shirt and start getting cold, throw on that jacket to keep you warm. When you get too hot, take it off. Everyone needs the perfect jacket in their closet. Check out all of the cute outerwear pieces at CHC Vintage to find outerwear to keep with you during the day.

Do not be afraid to try new things! And those new things can be old. CHC Vintage sells vintage clothing to you that is unique and matches your style, or puts you out of your comfort zone. The best way to transition into a new season is to try something new. Visit CHC Vintage online or on our Etsy store to find amazing vintage clothing for a new look this season.

Why You Should Buy More Vintage

Nicole Couch

Here are a few reasons why we think you should buy more vintage.

When you buy vintage, you're buying clothes that are unique or rare. This means that you're chances of matching anyone else is highly unlikely.

Most of the clothing in today's fast fashion chain stores are made of cheap materials to save on costs. Contrarily, most vintage items were created with more attention to detail & prove their higher quality by withstanding the test of time.

Because big fashion retailers decide to skip costs and use cheaper materials, their mass produced clothing items are more likely to be damaged, broken or go out of style quicker than their vintage counterparts. So why not spend a little extra to get something that lasts?

Many times newer trends are just old trends reinvented. By buying vintage you're basically buying the 'real thing'...the clothes that were cool BEFORE it was cool. Tell that to your trendy friends...

Wearing vintage ensures that you'll have your own unique look. Since it's not something displayed in store windows anymore, you really have stylistic freedom and can get creative with it however you want.

Buying Vintage = Recycling = Saving the Planet.

It is estimated that the world is consuming 400% more clothing than we did just 20 years ago (Livia Firth, The True Cost). So step up and do your part! Keep trendy vintage in rotation.

Lastly,

You're unique, beautiful and rare. There is no one quite like you. So don't buy clothes that disguise that! Invest in clothes that understand what it's like to be one-of-a-kind.

Tips for Styling Vintage Clothing into Modern Looks

Nicole Couch

Have you ever passed up on cool vintage pieces because you didn't know how to incorporate them into your modern wardrobe? Well this article is here to help! Here are 5 tips for styling vintage clothes into everyday looks.

1.) Mix & Match

You don't have to wear vintage head-to-toe! Mix in one or two vintage pieces (ex. a vintage dress & necklace, a vintage blouse and ring) but modernize it by using trendy pieces for the rest. Think: cardigans, leggings, sweaters, and jeans (basic pieces that can be layered over or under).

2.) Modern Accessories

You can make any vintage piece feel modern again by adding trendy accessories. Try a fashionable handbag, a cool belt, your favorite heels or a stylish fedora.

3.) Contemporary Hair

You can rock vintage while also wearing your everyday hair style. Just because you're wearing clothing from a certain era doesn't mean you have to look like that era. Bring the look into the 21st century by adding your own personalized touches and keeping your hair simple.

4.) Mix & Match Eras

Mixing clothing from different time periods has a way of looking very cool and trendy. Wearing vintage from only one era can oftentimes look costume-y or like you're trying to live in that era. If you incorporate looks from different time periods you're more likely to blend in and look fashion-forward.

5.) Be Comfortable

This is probably the most important tip. If you don't feel comfortable in an outfit you'll probably look uncomfortable to others. Make sure to style the vintage pieces in a way that makes you feel happy and natural.

We hope these styling tips help and encourage you to add more vintage into your everyday look!

Summer 2016's statement accessory

Nicole Couch

Remember back in the 90's when choker necklaces used to be the Cool thing to wear?? Well, worry no more because your favorite accessory from back then is now back and more popular than ever!

These accessories were seen on every runway show, from New York to London, Milan and even Paris, choker accessories have even made their way into couture fashion. When these first came out in the 90's there was really only one basic style, the back elastic material that everyone had.

Now, these chokers have evolved into an accessory that in some cases looks like an upscale art form. Made out of different fabrics and materials along with beadings, bows, and even flowers, what used to be a simple plain accessory has evolved into something that we have never seen before! Still love the originals?? Don't worry, they're around too.
